Burke VA Paver Patios: Invasive Tree Roots

Homeowners in Burke VA may find that invasive tree roots are causing problems with their paver patios. What can be done to prevent that situation?

Before the paver patio is even installed, all tree roots that could cause a problem should be removed. There’s a couple of good reasons for that: first, you don’t want growing tree roots to jack up your pavers, and secondly, if dead tree roots disintegrate, it could lead to a void, and your pavers will sink down into the void.

Since there are a lot of trees in Burke VA, your patio installers should leave 3-6 feet of space between the trees and the pavers. Other ways of handling the tree roots include building a cement barrier into the soil to prevent the tree roots from reaching the paver patio, or even removing trees. All roots and stumps should be removed before the paver installation begins.

So, let’s say that root prevention wasn’t done or had been less than successful. What happens to your paver patio?

The good news is that - unlike cement - pavers can easily be removed by your patio installer. The patio installer will number the pavers, and remove enough to allow the root problem to be addressed. (Your landscaper should be involved in removing roots, so that it can be done in a thorough manner, with the least amount of damage done to your tree.) If a root barrier is needed, one will be installed then. Afterwards, your paver installer will re-install the pavers, and your patio should look like there never was a root problem.
