Homeowners should stay away from traditional “Rock Salt” when removing ice from their Fairfax VA paver patios.
While it’s the least expensive of the de-icers, Sodium Chloride (aka Rock Salt) can cause problems with your pavers. For one thing, the melted brine solution can enter porous pavers, and then refreeze when the temperature gets below 15 degrees Fahrenheit, which could lead to spalling and cracking. Rock salt can also leave a residue behind on your pavers (which is challenging to get off) and isn’t safe for landscaping or pets.
Calcium Chloride is an option as a de-icer. It is a bit safer for your landscaping and pets than rock salt, and is effective in temperatures as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly reducing the risk of refreezing which can cause spalling and cracking. Additionally, this type of ice melt usually stays on the pavers, and isn’t likely to be tracked into your house.
Of the three we’ve listed here, Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) is the safest for your pavers, landscaping, pets, and the environment in general. CMA is made from limestone and vinegar, and is non-corrosive. CMA can be bought at your local hardware or home supply store, and works well until temps reach -5 to -10.
As always, read and follow the directions of the de-icer product. Over-applying any de-icer can be problematic.
It’s important to remember that Fairfax VA paver patios that are sealed after installation are least likely to have any damage due to the weather or the products you use to de-ice them.
Homeowners in Fairfax VA having new paver patios installed should consider having an electric or liquid snow-melting system installed underneath their patios. With a flip of a switch, snow and ice won’t stick to these heated paver patios.
