Fire Pits vs. Fireplaces: Which is a better fit for your Fairfax VA home?
Both fire pits and fireplaces provide light, warmth, relaxation, and can be fueled by either wood or gas. The pros and cons of each are dependent on your outdoor space, comfort level with open flame, the ambiance you want to foster, and the amount of people you anticipate enjoying the fire pit or fireplace.
So how do you determine which is better for your home?
Outdoor Space
If you have a spectacular view from your property, a fire pit is a better choice for you. A fireplace becomes the focal point of your outdoor area - so visitors will focus their attention on that, rather than the wonderful view you want to share. The fireplace could also cut or block your view completely.
If your property is affected by wind, a fireplace will be easier to light than a fire pit, and depending on placement, could block the majority of the wind.
Comfort Level with Open Flame
Do you hate smoke? Does the idea of an open flame scare you, or do the embers from a fire make you nervous? Then a fireplace is a better choice for you. If smoke and embers don’t bother you, then a fire pit would be just fine.
Ambiance
What mood are you looking to create? If you want to create a cozy or romantic ambiance, then a fireplace is your best bet. If you want to create more of a social/party/ campfire atmosphere, a fire pit will best fit in with those plans.
Number of People
A fireplace is great for a small group of people. If you plan on entertaining groups of 5 people or more, a fire pit will provide 360 degrees of campfire-like enjoyment.
